| Don't count on curing your Plantar Fasciitis with this splint! | 2010-09-07 | 2 / 5 |
| I had high hopes for this splint. After reading many reviews for other night splints, the one thing that kept coming up was how impossible they were to walk in. And, I need to be able to get up a couple times a night to visit the restroom, so I wanted something that I would be able to walk in.
Well, I can walk in this alright, but not much else. It slides down my leg causing the foot part to slide down and practically off my toes. At night my foot wants to relax and when it does it pulls the strap away from the hard splint causing the splint where it curves to dig into my foot. If I make the strap tighter it cuts off the circulation and that hurts. After trying for three nights, I haven't been able to go longer than 2 hours with it on before I wake up in pain.
I have found it comfortable enough to wear while hanging out watching TV, but if I need to get up and move about for any length of time I have to take it off.
Only mildly helpful. It doesn't provide any stretch at all. In order to do so the strap would have to go around the toes very tightly, pulling them up towards the splint. But, that is very painful to the toes. Wrapping the strap around the ball of the foot does not pull the foot forward enough to provide the stretch it needs. |
| Futuro Night Splint | 2010-09-05 | 1 / 5 |
| I bought this night splint from Walgreen's, then returned it. It was one of many suggested for help with drop foot, which I now have. It was of little help for me. The fabric under the foot did not provide enough support. Yes, it is low profile, but I need something to keep the ball of my foot lifted to a 90 degree position. Also, because it is only ankle-high, it did slip down my foot, thus allowing my foot to drop to about a 60 degree angle. This in turn allowed for calf cramping. I have found that unless there is an ankle strap from heel to crook of ankle, the braces all slide down the foot. The problem with a nice secure ankle strap is that it does put pressure on the top of the ankle. This I found uncomfortable against my ganglion cysts on the top of my foot. Ai-yi-yi. So many problems.
The best thing I have found so far is the Darco pneumatic Night Splint. I'm not done looking for a better one, but in the meantime this at least keeps my calf from cramping at night, by providing calf stretch. I have also developed plantar fasciitis, which this helps to alleviate by keeping the bottom of my foot stretched. The soft lining feels cozy and comforting, and the sole has a foot-shaped tread to prevent slipping when walking to the bathroom at night. However, because it has velcro straps, I need to wear long socks or pj bottoms to protect my other leg! The plastic airline is a pain, but the air cushion under my toes is awesome. I wear a 9-9.5 USA women's shoe, so I have the Medium size splint which is a good length. People with very wide feet will like this boot, which is so wide for me that it's pretty sloshy in the toes, with no way to adjust it tighter. Like I said before, it's not perfect, but it's the best thing I've found. Don't waste your money on the Futuro brace, or if you try it, make sure you can return it if you don't like it.
As Darco does not sell directly off the internet, I ordered it through my physical therapist.
[...]Good luck! |
| Brace not effective | 2010-08-29 | 2 / 5 |
| | This brace is not effective in stretching the plantar fascitis tendon. It is smaller, and I can easily sleep in it. But the only thing it does is keep me from a toe-point in my sleep. Though my foot still has a toe-point to the extent as if I were wearing moderate pumps. Also, at times I wake up in the night with leg pain because I've wrapped the leg portion a little tight. I took it to the podiatrist at Johns Hopkins, who had not seen this style before, assured me that I was wearing it correctly (only real fit on my leg), but agreed it was not very effective. |
| okay after adjusting for my size | 2010-07-28 | 4 / 5 |
| | I had the same experience with this product as some of the other reviewers; it kept slipping off my leg. I'm a smaller person, and the slots for the upper strap were too high, necessitating a very tight wrap that nevertheless kept slipping. (I don't know why the directions tell you where to place the strap, as its position is clearly fixed by the slots.) As there were no other device options that appealed to me, I simply removed the upper strap, reversed it so that the velcro-type material was on the other side, and wrapped it around the device at a lower point of my ankle/calf. Although it took a bit a practice, and I sometimes had to readjust it after wrapping the toe/ball of foot portion, which I also moved slightly, since the original position would have gone past the end of my toes, it worked quite well. My foot feels much better in the morning now, and, as a person who doesn't like my feet covered, I like that this product covers a minimal part of the bottom of the foot. I only wish that Futuro would make a smaller version for those of us who are of small stature, with smaller feet, as well as some sort of discreet support for daytime. |
| Shoe size 7 or less beware! | 2010-07-27 | 2 / 5 |
| I bought this brace at CVS because it was the only night-splint available for PF and because I already use Futuro braces for my wrists (carpel tunnel) and absolutely love them. Futuro products had always been something I could trust in. Until I bought this brace.
I don't want to rag on Futuro because I have multiple joint issues and I've always been able to trust them with an inexpensive solution, so I was really dissapointed when I bought this foot brace and found that it was practically useless.
The top band kept slipping down my calf and becoming too loose while the bottom strap would slowly slip off of my toes. At first I thought this was a tension issue, but no matter how I tightened the straps, at every which angle, either the brace would slide, my foot wouldn't be braced or, when I finally got it to stay put and hold my foot in the proper position, the straps were so tight they cut off circulation to my toes.
I finally realized the problem was that I did not fall into the "one-size-fits-most" bracket. The brace was too big. I wear between a 6.5 to a 7 (womens) shoe depending on the type of shoe. I asked my roommate, who averages a half size bigger than me, to try the brace and it "mostly" fit, but still had some issues with slipping. I finally gave the brace to my sister, who has PF like me and a shoe size of 8.5, and she likes it alright, except apparently the velcro wears out quickly. (although that might be from my many desperate attempts to get the brace to fit me)
All in all, if you have a shoe size of womans 8 or larger, go ahead and give it a shot. But if you have smaller feet, don't bother. Go with a brace that comes in a smaller size. |
