Heather Van Vorous has had IBS for over two decades; she endured the condition for six years as a child before even being diagnosed. Over many years she has educated herself on every aspect of this chronic conditionby listening to her own body, gradually modifying her diet, reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors, exploring stress management and alternative health therapies, and using the Internet to communicate daily with other people who have IBS. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides all those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with IBS. In a unique format,
The First YearIBS walks you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and the following eleven months of the crucial first year. In clear, concise, accessible language, Van Vorous covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with the diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including:
Key strategies for symptom prevention
Guidelines, tips, and recipes for understanding and modifying your diet
Stress management and exercise
Dealing with family, friends, and co-workers
Current medical research and medications
Restaurants and holidays
Effective alternative therapies
Traveling and socializing
Support group resources

| Good tips for IBS, but do you really have IBS? | 2009-12-27 | 5 / 5 |

For 19 years I suffered from what I thought was IBS. This book helped, but still I did not feel normal.
Finally after following a gluten free diet I feel normal again. So if you have IBS, then this book is a must read, but if you have not been tested for Celiac disease or have not tried a gluten free diet, you might want to try it. It could save you many years of trying to figure out what is wrong with your digestive system.

| I bought several books on this topic, and my wife rated all of them outstanding. It is best to get more than one book on any topic relating to your health. |

| I have a very severe case of IBS and I followed the guidelines exactly as they were written, I have not had an attack in three weeks yet so far. I have reduced my medication from six pills a day to one a day. The physician said that I will probably never have to take them again, (I heard that the antispasmatic pills are hard on your liver in the long term) so this is great news for me to not have to take them anymore. I have also lost a lot of weight. This book has helped me the most by the nutritional guidelines you follow. The book is written so well and very easy to follow. To learn the difference between soluble fiber and insoluble fiber was the key for me. You have to remember this is a life style change, don't look back, you will feel great if you follow this book. |

I was diagnosed with IBS, but never really got any guidance from the local 'specialists' on what to do about it - I couldn't ever get more than a 5-minute discussion with a doctor on the subject.
This book does a great job of explaining what IBS is, and what to do about it. It might not be the most detailed or technical book on the market, but it at least got me to the point where I understood what to do. I followed some of the recommendations of this book (especially moving to a low-fat diet), and it has worked wonders.
STRONGLY recommended if you have IBS and just aren't sure where to start. |
